Abstract

This article examines the key success factors of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the context of the digital economy and accelerating digital transformation. Given the growing importance of SMEs in national economic systems as drivers of employment, innovation, and regional development, understanding the determinants of their success in the digital era is essential for enhancing competitiveness and long-term sustainability. The study is based on the assumption that traditional success factors of SMEs, such as access to capital, market proximity, and operational efficiency, are no longer sufficient to ensure resilience in a rapidly evolving digital environment. Instead, SME performance increasingly depends on digital maturity, managerial capabilities, innovation capacity, human capital quality, and the effective integration of digital technologies into business processes. The article analyzes the impact of digital technologies on SME competitiveness, highlighting the role of e-commerce platforms, cloud computing, data analytics, customer relationship management systems, automation, and artificial intelligence in improving operational efficiency, market reach, and customer engagement. At the same time, the research identifies major barriers and risks associated with SME digital transformation, including financial constraints, limited access to digital infrastructure, skills shortages, cybersecurity threats, regulatory uncertainty, and organizational resistance to change. These challenges are particularly pronounced for smaller firms with limited financial and managerial resources, increasing the risk of fragmented or ineffective digitalization efforts. Based on a synthesis of recent academic research and conceptual analysis, the study proposes a structured framework of success factors for SMEs in the digital era, encompassing technological readiness, leadership and governance, financial capacity, innovation orientation, customer-centric strategies, and integration into digital ecosystems. Furthermore, the article formulates practical recommendations aimed at enhancing SME performance through improved regulatory environments, expanded access to digital and innovation finance, strengthened entrepreneurial education, support for digital skills development, and the promotion of business clusters, incubators, and startup ecosystems.
